Musician Michael Nix Performs at the Brookline Arts Center's
Crafts Showcase Preview Reception

Michael Nix will provide musical accompaniment at Preview Reception festivities at the Brookline Arts Center's 32nd Annual Crafts Showcase on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 from 6 to 9 pm. Nix plays the seven-string Banjar, an instrument of his own design, which combines elements of the classical five-string banjo and the classical guitar.

Based in Greenfield, MA, Nix has performed on his Banjar, as well as guitar, lute, banjo and mandolin through the United States and in Asia. His repertoire includes original compositions, jazz, ragtime, Irish and folk tunes, Renaissance and Baroque lute dances, and pieces from the canons of his Banjar's predecessors, the classical banjo and classical guitar. His original compositions are influenced by electronic music, folk, jazz and world music.

In addition to performing live, Nix has had his music broadcast on NPR's Weekend Edition and on WGBH's Morning Pro Musica. He has recorded two albums, East & West, with Charlie Moser on mandolin, and a solo recording, Preludes, Airs and Dances, both of which feature his guitar playing. He is currently working on a third solo album that will feature his Banjar. Both East & West and Preludes, Airs and Dances will be available for sale at the Crafts Showcase Preview Reception.

The Preview Reception is the public's first chance to view and purchase handmade crafts at the Crafts Showcase. Craftspeople across the country have been chosen to present their jewelry, glassware, ceramics, Christmas ornaments and Hanukkah items, kitchenware, and clothing at this well-known annual fundraiser. Some of the Showcase's 80-100 participating artists will be present at the Reception, and refreshments from local businesses will be served. Tickets for the Preview Reception are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door, and may be purchased by calling the Brookline Arts Center at 617-566-5715.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street in Brookline, one block from the St. Mary's stop on the MBTA Green line. For more information, call 617-566-5715 or www.brooklineartscenter.com.
