Brookline Arts Center Presents New Glass Enamels by 16 Artists in "Enamels: Facing the Future"

The Brookline Arts Center will host an exhibit of new enamels by 16 artists in "Enamels: Facing the Future" from July 24 to August 31, 2006. The public is invited to meet the artists at a free opening reception on Friday, August 4, 2006 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition features celebrated Brookline artists Toni Strassler and Brookline Arts Center faculty member Margaret Langdell. Strassler is known for the exquisite miniature landscapes and still life images that she renders in cloisonné enamel. One of the works exhibited at the Brookline Arts Center experiments with the abstract baroque patterns seen in gemstones. Margaret Langdell will show works from a series that recalls the sinuous line and dreamlike images of art nouveau.

Artist Virginia D. Porter of Ashland, Massachusetts has also been working in this medium for many years: she has taught enameling at the DeCordova Museum and won awards for her art at the Southboro Art Center and the Concord Art Association. Exhibitors Isabella Corwin and Leni Fuhrman have translated the aesthetic they developed as painters to enamels, which are made from fusing glass onto metal.

A number of the exhibiting artists are students who are newer to this historic medium: Brookline Arts Center student Gail Semigran and her teenaged daughter Hannah Semigran will each exhibit two works. One of Gail's works, Thumbelina, was created at the request of another daughter. Other students featured in the exhibition are Sally Mayer, Vladimir Barsukov, Sarah Sears, Saras Yerlig and Jan Jennings.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, Brookline, one block from the St. Mary's stop on the MBTA Green Line. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The gallery is handicapped accessible. For more information, call 617-566-5715 or visit www.brooklineartscenter.com.

The programs of the Brookline Arts Center are supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Enamels: Facing the Future is supported by a grant from the Enamelist Society of America.
